Ramirez: Misa Criolla

This work by the Argentinian composer Ariel Ramirez was composed in 1964. The words are those of the usual Mass, but in Spanish rather than Latin, which had recently been permitted by the Catholic Church in that year. The music is based on the Creole tradition brought to Argentina by Spanish colonists.

The music changes from reflective, slow passages to energetic dance rhythms, with striking percussion accompaniment.

Notes by Neil Sykes.
